The history of makeup

Ancient Egypt & Romans

Archaeological evidence found the use of cosmetics in Ancient Egypt around 4,000 BC. Both the Ancient Greeks and Romans also used cosmetics, neither being aware of the danger they were exposing themselves to with the harmful properties contained in these products such as mercury and white lead.
Kohl, used to outline the eyes was made up of lead, copper, burned almonds, soot and other ingredients and it was believed that by wearing makeup, it protected from evil spirits whilst also improving failing eye sight.
All levels of society in this ancient time wore makeup.
The Romans developed makeup, mainly worn by female slaves and it was called cosmetae.

North Africa, Middle East, South & East Asia

Henna and kohl can trace their roots back to North Africa and we see both these products used still widely used in many parts of the world including Africa, the Middle East, South East Asia. Since around the 4th and 5th centuries, henna has been used in India either as a hair dye or in the art of mehndi, an art where complex designs are painted on to hands and feet, especailly before a wedding or for a special occasion. This is still practised today, although for both trend as well as tradition. African designs tend to be bolder than those of India.

Cosmetics have been used in the Middle East since ancient time and you can still see the beautiful kohl pots for the Arabian Gulf made from local silver for both men and women.

In China, people started staining their fingernails with gum Arabic, gelatin and beeswax around 3000 BC and the different colours defined class with the lower classed be banned from wearing bright colours on their nails.

Geishas
The geishas of Japan wore lipstick made of crushed safflower petals from the safflower which they also used to paint their eyebrows and edges of the eyes. We are all familiar with the classic geisha white skin and rose bud lips. Bintsuke wax, as soft was used by geishas as a makeup base with rice powder colors for the face and back.

Dangerous make up!!!!

The Church of the Middle Ages considered makeup to be sinful and immoral as it was worn by prostitutes and upper class women. With the change that the Renaissance brought and up until the Industrial Revolution, makeup was revived from rediscovery and reintroduction of the Ancient World. With the lower class generally working outdoors in agricultural jobs, the usual light Caucasian skin tone was darkened by weather exposure.
The higher classes had to stay out of the sun to keep their skin pale. The result was that a number of beauty products were used to lighten the skin which included WHITE LEAD PAINT which may also have contained ARSENIC and which subsequently lead the many DEATHS. Queen Elizabeth 1 of England, famous for her red hair and white skin, is a well documented example through all her portraits and paintings.

task 5 favourite product

I dont have a particular brand that I use but i couldnt live without mascara. In my opinion its the best makeup that you can use because even if you have have no other make up on you can get up in the morning and put on mascara and it tottaly transforms your face, opens up the eyes and makes them stand out and look pretty.
The one im using just now is L'Oreal false lash telescopic waterproof mascara in black.  It cost roughly £10 which isnt to bad as makeup goes because their are other makes that cost a lot more.

Top 3 wigs in movie or tv

Heres a few movies  that I like that have wigs in them........

1 - NARNIA  The lion the witch and the wardrobe.

This film won a bafta for best makeup and hair. I especial liked Mr Tumnus (played by James McAvoy) wig and beard as it transforms him in to half man half faun. the makeup artist Nikki Gooley also applied the actors wigs and facial hair.

2 - Hairspray

I loved the wigs in hairspray because they are all very 60s because it was set in 1962!
Its a very fun film with lots of singing and dancing.

3 -  The avengers

Chris hemsworth wore a blonde wig when he played the hammer-wielding god Thor in The Avengers.
Here he is before and after

The lion king is a musical thats on in London in the Lyceum theatre, they have loads of wigs in this prodution and the wig mistress that takes care of them is called Neila dawes.

SFX

I done this with makeup to Paula the other week and just thought I would share. Xx

Wigs

This is a photo of Paula's hair after I prepared it for a wig! After I don't this I put a stocking cap on her.

Task 4

Here is a list of some films thats makeup inspires me

1 - Men in black 3

SFX makeup artist guru Rick Baker has once again worked his magic, and there is even more fun aliens this time around. This  photo also shows that, as expected, Jemaine Clement‘s villain has some creepy peepers hiding behind his aviator sunglasses!

2 - Pirates of the Caribbean: On stranger tides

Joel Harlow crews up for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides as the make-up department head and practical creature effects supervisor, as well as Johnny Depp's personal make-up artist.

3 -  Alice in wonderland

The make up is really over the top in this film which I love except from alice's make up because she is a young innocent girl so her make up is really quite minimal. I love the snow queens make up because they have made her look really white (as snow) and darkened her eyebrows with really red lips which make them stand out.

4 - The dark Knight

The picture on the left is out of a book of paintings by Francis bacon and this was John Caglione jr (Make up artist) insperation for the jokers make up. He said "That book became my bible in designing and executing the various clown looks in the movie". The Joker’s character is all makeup and prosthetics, John done the Joker’s makeup looks and Conor O'Sullivan and Rob Trenton (the film’s prosthetic makeup artists) created the scars.

5 - Beetlejuice

Ve Neill (born Mary Flores) is an American makeup artist. She has won three Acadamy Awards, for the films Beetlejuice , Mrs. Doubtfire and Ed Wood  She has been nominated for eight Oscars total.

Q4. What is the most interesting thing you have learned or learned how to do so far?
A - The most interesting thing ive learned so far is how to do the cuts and bruises in SFX and make them look realistic.
